Medina Community Band will present the fifth concert of the 2019 summer season, a celebration of 160 years (since 1859) of presenting community concerts in Medina, on Thursday, July 4 2019, in Medina’s Uptown Park Square Gazebo. Concerts will continue every Friday through Friday, July 26. There will be no concert on Friday, July 5. All concerts will begin at 8:30p.
Cancellation of concerts will be posted on the website as soon as the decision has been made. A “fan newsletter” will be sent to those individuals who have signed up to receive the newsletter.
Cornetist Kevin Wallick, performing Herbert L. Clarke’s solo From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific; flutist Sadie Nayman, performing Cécile Chaminade’s Concertino, Op. 107; and, vocalist Denise Milner Howell, performing Claude-Michel Schönberg’s I Dreamed a Dream (from Les Misérables) will be featured on the evening’s concert. The ice cream social for July 4 will be sponsored by The Kiwanis Breakfast Club of Medina.
Under the baton of Marcus Neiman, the band will perform John Williams’ Indiana Jones Selection;Bart Howard’s Fly Me to the Moon (celebrating the 50th anniversary of man’s landing on the moon) and, marches by John Philip Sousa (The Stars and Stripes Forever) and an armed forces salute!
Matthew Hastings, assistant conductor, will conduct Bodewalt Lampe’s Yankee Girl and Edwin Franko Goldman’s sing-a-long Cheerio.
Concerts by the Medina Community Band traditionally last approximately one hour and are patterned after outdoor band concerts in the 1880s through 1930s and feature concert overtures, solos by instrumentalists and vocalists, as well as popular selections, and lots and lots of marches.
As of June 1, the following featured soloist and ensembles will appear with Medina Community Band, subject to change: Friday, July 19 – George Rosin, trombone soloist.
Area social and civic groups will be featured as summer social hosts providing light refreshments at a reasonable donation during each concert: July 12 – Medina High School Band Boosters; July 19, Medina Lions Club; and, July 26 – Medina Creative Housing.
Marcus Neiman conducts Medina Community Band and will be joined in the conducting duties by Matthew Hastings (assistant conductor).
Medina Community Band is proudly sponsored and supported by the Medina Community Band Association, composed of members of Medina Community Band. The board of directors consists of Lu Ann Gresh, president; Amy Muhl, vice president; Gail Sigmund, financial secretary; Karen Sater, treasurer; Sue McLaughlin, secretary; with directors John Connors, Dr. Thomas Kenat, Robert Moore, and Kristin Thompson.
Membership in MCB is open and there are no dues or auditions; however, members are expected to maintain a regular attendance. The band rehearses on Wednesday evening from 7p – 9p in the orchestra room of Medina High School (777 East Union Street, Medina) during June and July; and September through the end of May rehearsing in the band room of Highland Middle School (3880 Ridge Road, Medina). The band also presents their popular summer series every Friday, June through July, in Medina’s Uptown Park Gazebo. Each year the band presents at a winter concert, spring concert, and the popular “Sousa Concert” at EHOVE Career Center (Milan, OH). Denise Milner Howell, mezzo-soprano, is a versatile performer of opera, concerts, and recitals, whose singing has been called “superb” (Cleveland Classical). Ms. Howell’s solo engagements include performances with Cleveland Opera Theater, Opera Cleveland, Chautauqua Opera, Kent/Blossom Festival, Nightingale Opera Theatre, Akron Symphony Orchestra, Akron Lyric Opera Theatre, Akron Baroque, Tanglewood Festival, Carousel Dinner Theatre, and Buffalo Philharmonic.
Recent performances include leading roles in Little Women (Meg), Amahl and the Night Visitors (Mother), Carmen (Mercédès), La cambiale di matrimonio (Clara), Robert Ward’s The Crucible (Rebecca Nurse), and Iolanthe (Celia). A frequent concert soloist, Ms. Howell has performed the alto solos in Handel’s Messiah, Mozart Requiem, Bach Magnificat, Haydn Lord Nelson Mass, Verdi Requiem, Vivaldi Gloria and Duruflé Requiem. Additionally, Ms. Howell is committed to the performance of new works by living composers, and has been heard at Cleveland Ingenuity Festival and New to New York Concert Series.
In addition to performing, Ms. Howell is an active voice teacher. She currently teaches at Cleveland Institute of Music/Case Western Reserve University, and Kent State University Hugh A. Glauser School of Music. She lives in Sharon Township, Ohio with her husband, Gregg, and their three children.
Kevin Wallick, cornet soloist, earned a bachelor of arts degree in communications from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. He has been married to his wife, Kim, for 28 years, and they have one daughter, Amanda.
Kevin is the business manager for Wadsworth based CityLink. Prior to holding that position, he was with Frontier. He joined Frontier in 2010 as general manager in eastern Ohio and was based in New Philadelphia. He was promoted to area general manager for Mid-States in 2013 and subsequently became vice president for Mid-States, where he led the market to operational excellence and broadband growth.
Before joining Frontier, Wallick managed several stores for Best Buy, the large electronics and home automation and entertainment store. He also had a more than 20-year successful career as an executive for Sterling Jewelry Inc., which is home to nine brands of fine jewelry stores and is the nation’s largest retail jeweler. He is currently director of operations for Frontier Communications in Ohio.
Wallick, a lifelong Ohio resident, has played trumpet for over 40 years, he currently resides in North Canton, Ohio. He has been a member of Medina Community Band since 2016.
Sadie Claire Nayman, flute, will complete her senior year at Highland High School this spring (2019), where she is a member of the school’s marching band and wind ensemble. She was a member of the pit orchestra (Fall 2016, 2017 and 2018 musicals; appeared as a guest flute soloist with the Highland High School Orchestra and Choir (Fall 2016) in Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ. Sadie was the recipient of the Highland Middle School Director’s Award (Spring 2015), High School Freshman Pride Award in Music (Spring 2016), and Band Trophy (Spring 2018).
Sadie is an honoree of the 61st Annual Medina Spring Leadership Ball and a 2018 graduate of Junior Leadership Medina County. She was inducted in the National Honor Society in 2016 and National Art Honor Society in 2017. Sadie is the founding member and co-president of Highland High School’s Tri-M Music Honor Society Chapter. She was selected to perform in the Baldwin Wallace College Conservatory Youth Band Camp (Summer 2015) and Honors Wind Ensemble (Spring 2016); Ohio State University Flute Workshop (Summer 2016); Oberlin Flute Academy (Summer 2017); and, was invited to participate in the Greater Cleveland Flute Society-Flute Festival Senior Flute Choir (February 2017). In addition, she was selected to perform in the Northeast Ohio Regional Orchestra (NERO) in October 2017 and 2018 and the Ohio Music Education Association 2018 and 2019 Professional Conference “All-State Bands.”
Sadie has participated in the Medina County Schools’ Solo and Ensemble Festival (2014 and 2015) as well as the Ohio Music Education Association District Six Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event (2016 through 2019) and received consistent superior ratings in class “B” (2016) and class “A” (2017 through 2019) on both flute and piccolo performances. Sadie is a member of Marcus Neiman’s flute studio and a member of Medina Community Band. She was a featured piccolo and flute soloist with Medina Community Band during the 2017 and 2018 summer season concert series respectively.
