The Medina Community Band senior solo competition is open to any high school senior instrumentalist attending one of Medina County’s public, private high schools, or home school. All applicants must be enrolled as members of their school’s performing ensemble when applying and must continue their participation during the 2019-2020 academic year. Home school students may apply if sponsored by their private teacher. The parent of the home-schooled student will serve as school administrator.
The winner must be able to perform at the Medina Community Band Spring Concert on Sunday, May 3, 2020. Winner must also attend rehearsals (TBA). A cash scholarship prize of $500 will be awarded to the competition winner. The winner(s) will be announced by on/before Friday, February 28, 2020. All applicants will be notified via email.
All applicants will prepare a video digital recording of their solo (with or without accompaniment). The cut-off for receipt of the YouTube video link and application is 11:59 p.m., Friday, January 31, 2020. Videos will be uploaded to YouTube. Students will need to have their own YouTube accounts so they can upload a video, make it “unlisted,” and then share the links with marcusneiman@medinacommunityband.org, via email.
Application form: Students interested in applying for the competition should download and complete the application form (click on link – 2019 – MCB Solo Competition Application). All signatures and information must be included for the application to be valid. The application form should be completed, signed, and scanned, then emailed to Marcus Neiman, conductor, Medina Community Band (marcusneiman@medinacommunityband.org) by the posted deadline.
Video: Students should begin their video by announcing in a clear voice: their name, high school, composition, composer/arranger and then play their solo.
Solo literature will be taken from the list below. Solos need not be memorized.
